Syllabus
Year: I/Semester: II

Objective: To provide a foundation in digital electronics applicable to computer science students.
Contents:

1. Number system and their arithmetic:                                                                                5hrs
Decimal, Binary, Octal, Hexadecimal, Inter-conversion among different number systems, BCD, Gray code, ASCII code, Binary addition, Subtraction using 1’s and 2’s complement, Multiplication, Division.
 
2. Logic functions and gates:                                                                                                   3 hrs
AND, OR, NOT, NOR, NAND, XOR, XNOR, Gates symbols and truth table, Tristate logic.

3. Boolean algebra:                                                                                                                   8 hrs
Boolean constant, variables, expressions, function, laws, sum of products and product of sums, equations, simplification using Boolean algebra and Karnaugh-maps, don’t care condition.

4. Combinational logic Circuits:                                                                                             10 hrs
Half and full adder, Sub tractors, Combinational design example, Mux,
Demux, Encoder, Decoder, Seven segment decoder.

5. Flip-flops:                                                                                                                              6 hrs
RS flip-flop D flip-flop, JK flip-flop, Edge triggered flip-flop, Master-Slave flipflop.

6. Sequential Circuits:                                                                                                            3 hrs
State Diagram, Simple Sequential Circuits.

7. Registers and Counters:                                                                                                     8 hrs
Register, left and right shift register, Ripple up and down counter, Decade counter, Mode counter, Synchronous counter, Ring counter, Application of the counter, Serial in serial out, Serial in parallel out, Parallel in serial out, Parallel in parallel out.

8. Memories:                                                                                                                            2hrs
ROM, PROM, EPROM, static RAM, dynamic RAM.
